Bill Meckley playing his trombone on stage with the Empire Jazz Orchestra.The EJO will reunite for the first time for a concert benefiting music scholarships at the SUNY Schenectady School of Music. This promises to be a major event that Capital Region’s music lovers will not want to miss.

For twenty-five years the Empire Jazz Orchestra thrilled Capital Region audiences with its performances of major works for big band ranging from Louis Armstrong to Frank Zappa. The ensemble is especially noted for its playing of the original scores of Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn’s, Gil Evans, Oliver Nelson, and numerous other major composers and arrangers.

The EJO also hosted some of the world’s finest musicians as guest artists, including Benny Golson, Jimmy Heath, Randy Brecker, Lew Soloff, Dave Holland, and Rufus Reid. 

The Empire Jazz Orchestra is comprised of many of the Capital Region’s best professional players.
