Accounting A.A.S.

This curriculum is designed to prepare students for positions in the specialized field of accounting. Business and industry must have quantitative financial information available at all times to make valid everyday judgments and long range decisions. The accountant provides this information. The curriculum consists of an array of core business and accounting courses-from principles through auditing-providing students with a fine accounting background, preparing them for responsible positions in the accounting field. Students take a number of liberal arts and science courses to further equip them to take their place in society.

Graduates of this curriculum are very much in demand in the business world. Typical positions for which accounting graduates may qualify are trainees in management in business, industry and government; income tax examiners; auditors; cost accountants; senior account clerks; systems analysts; depreciation specialists and related accounting positions. 

The A.A.S. program in Accounting prepares students with the accounting knowledge and skills, technical competencies, and communication skills for successful careers in the public and private sectors. The program prepares graduates to:

Goal 1: Demonstrate an understanding of accounting principles and theory.

• Identify generally accepted accounting principles and methods to collect, organize, report and interpret financial information
• Identify the concepts underlying the preparation of financial statements
• Analyze the components of an effective internal control system

Goal II: Demonstrate knowledge of accounting in the contemporary business context.

• Apply logical and critical reasoning in evaluation and problem solving
• Utilize technology to research and illustrate accounting and financial information
• Examine the effects of the global environment on the accounting field

Goal III: Demonstrate accounting knowledge and skills for success in accounting positions.

• Apply fundamental accounting procedures
• Apply the appropriate AICPA professional and ethical standards
• Express ideas in an organized and coherent fashion, both orally and in writing
• Interpret and apply quantitative data
