SUNY Schenectady’s Air Traffic Control degree now includes Enhanced Collegiate Training Initiative (CTI) Status with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

We are one of only five colleges in the nation, the only college in New York State, and the only community college east of the Mississippi with Enhanced CTI Status.

This means that graduates can earn their Associate degrees in Air Traffic Control with Enhanced CTI in just two years and they are prepared to go to work immediately in an FAA facility.* 

Students train on the largest and most comprehensive ATC simulators in the East:

  • Seven 75” monitors for 215 degrees of complete tower immersion
  • Three ATC Tower stations for ultra-realistic training
  • Four radar TRACON stations for multi-training scenarios and realism
  • Seven Remote Pilot stations for real human-voice responses and pilotage
  • Voice-Recognition Software and AI aircraft for added realism
  • Voice-Phraseology Training and testing on iPads for accelerated learning
  • UFA Hardware & Software for the BEST in ATC Simulation
  • FAA Academy Curriculum for the BEST in ATC Training

The Air Traffic Control A.A.S. degree program provides students with a foundation in Air Traffic Control basics and skills for the continuous safe flow of aircraft in the airspace system. Students will effectively handle normal and emergency situations through simulated scenarios, one-one-one individualized training, and team training.

The College developed this program to help fill the national need for qualified Air Traffic Controllers as identified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Admission Requirements

Applicants must:

  • Possess a current, Class-2 medical certificate issued through an FAA Aeromedical Examiner (AME);
  • Be a U.S. citizen verifiable with U.S. passport or U.S. birth certificate;
  • Have a record free of any convictions that may disqualify them from obtaining an FAA security clearance, and
  • Be fluent in English and have no speech impediments.
  • Must have one year of full-time work experience (or part-time experience that adds up to one year of full-time work experience). 

*The entrance exam requirement for employment in FAA control towers is restricted to those 18 to 31 years of age.
