Archaeological Research

This course is mandatory for students fulfilling the 60 experience hours required for the SUNY Schenectady Community Archaeology Program (CAP) certificate. Additionally, this course is required for all students engaged in archaeological research and laboratory under a SUNY Schenectady CAP instructor’s supervision. Students must speak with an instructor before registering. Register for Archaeological Research.

This course is necessary for all Community Archaeology Program (CAP) certificate students wishing to work on their approved archaeological products (e.g., articles for publication, exhibits, public presentations or site studies and reports) and is required for their Certificates of Advanced Study in Community Archaeology (CASCA). Students must speak with an instructor before registering. Register for Independent Archaeology Project.

This tour will begin at the 1772 Old Stone Fort proper and walk the historic recreated Palatine German Farm on site. The tour will walk the original valley road past the recreated farm field and visit the c. 1780 Dutch Barn and Hartman’s Dorf House. The tour will examine one of the least researched colonial ethnic groups in our region. Students will be introduced to the farm lives of these early 18th century German refugees as well as where and how they settled the frontier wilds beyond Schenectady. The course will examine the lives of farmers in the “Bread Basket of the Revolution” through beautiful rural views, architecture, artifacts and the historic interpretation of the “Hartman’s Dorf” House. Students should wear comfortable clothing and footwear, bring a bottled water, and a bagged lunch. Register for 18th Century Palatine German Tour - Old Stone Fort.

This class will tour the Palatine Parsonage, the oldest Palatine German structure in the Schoharie Valley. The tour will examine the spiritual life as well as the architectural heritage of the Palatine Germans as they established themselves in the Schoharie Valley. The 19th century use of the house as a free African-American church and the community that established itself around it will also be discussed.
