Credit for Prior Learning Request

How to Submit a Request

Students interested in submitting a proposal for Credit for Prior Learning should contact their Academic Advisor. Students should think of prior-learning requests as learning components within the overall degree. Guided by their research and consultation with the Advisor, the student will develop the request and credit proposal and the Advisor will review the submission.

For each course under consideration, the student must also provide verifiable evidence of prior learning. Materials may include but are not limited to portfolios, performances, research, apprenticeships, internships, military training and education, and professional certifications.

Then, a faculty member or faculty review committee, appointed by the Division Dean, will evaluate the student's proficiencies materials in accordance with the student learning outcomes for the course and make recommendations for credit.

If the faculty reviewer or faculty review committee has further inquiry as to a student’s proficiencies, an interview with the student or an internally-developed examination may also be deemed necessary.

The recommendation for credit must be approved by the Division Dean and the Vice President of Academic Affairs.

Note:

Credit earned for prior learning is not considered as earned in residence (From College Catalog, page 34):

  • Residence Requirements – Associate’s Degree: At least 30 semester credit hours in residence applied to the degree program must be successfully completed in order to be eligible for an Associate’s degree.
  • Residence Requirements – Certificate: At least 15 semester credit hours in residence applied to the certificate program must be successfully completed in order to be eligible for a certificate.

Credit earned for prior learning will be recorded as “credit” (CR) on transcripts and will have no effect on a student’s grade-point average. Students must accumulate 12 or more semester hours of residence credit and pay a processing fee before credit for prior learning is submitted for consideration.
