Study Abroad

SUNY Schenectady offers students the opportunity to become global citizens through global themed coursework and studying abroad. Students can participant in short term travel trips or semester long programs. Studying abroad offers student the opportunity to immerse themselves in another culture and travel the world outside of Schenectady.

Short term travel trips are faculty-lead trips which can range in duration of one to four weeks long. These courses are developed with a specific field or topic in mind. Some courses are for specific majors and others are open to anyone. In order to participate in a study abroad program you must be a registered student the semester prior to traveling, apply and be approved to participate on a study abroad program, meet all financial obligations according to the payment schedule outlined for each program and have a 2.25 cumulative GPA.

Short Term Travel Refund Policy

Participants are required to make a non-refundable deposit of $550 upon signing up for any short term travel trip through the college. A full refund, minus the deposit and any costs incurred by SUNY Schenectady regarding trip costs, will be granted prior to 60 days of the trip departure date. No refund will be awarded after the final payment date or 60 days prior to departure date, whichever comes first.

If a student must cancel their trip after the 60 day refund date and there is an outstanding balance left the following procedure will apply:

  1. If the student’s failure to participate in the trip would result in an increase in the overall costs of other students on the trip, the cancellation student will be responsible for making all final payments on time.
  2. If the cancellation will not result in an increase in the trip costs for the remaining students, the student may write a letter requesting a waiver from the additional charges to the Dean of Learner Support. This letter must be received within 5 business days of the final payment date. Failure to submit this letter will result in the remaining balance being owed by the cancellation student.

If, for any reason, a participant chooses to leave a trip early or is required by the college to return home due to disciplinary removal from the program, all expenses will be the sole responsibility of the participant. SUNY Schenectady will not be responsible for any costs. A participant will also not receive any refund, as per the refund policy.
