Professor Calhoun’s thirty plus years of practical, hands-on experience in early childhood and elementary education include her family home daycare and child care programs with infants through school-aged children, elementary school grades kindergarten through fifth, summer programs for school-aged children, and nursery school programs. Teaching is her passion! She knows she is making a difference, indirectly, in the lives of many children through the adults she educates. She believes everyone has the potential make a positive difference in a child's life, and that all challenges can be overcome as long as “children are healthy and safe.” In 2011, she was awarded the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Faculty Service to recognize her consistently superior service and outreach in her discipline through her campus, local community and state involvements to benefit children. Along with being a certified elementary education teacher, Professor Calhoun is also certified as: The CLASS Tool: Preschool Environment Interactions Assessor; The CLASS Tool: Toddler Environment Interactions Assessor; New York State Early Learning Trainer Credential: Level 3; New York State Teacher Certification Exam Evaluator; New York State Snowmobile Safety Instructor; and Environment Rating Scales Assessor (ITERS, ECERS, FCCERS, SACERS). Tamara’s students benefit from her extensive experience as she incorporates best practices criteria and the realities of current education in each of her courses to prepare tomorrow’s teachers in meeting the needs of all students in their classrooms. The foundation for Tamara’s passion for teaching is her wholehearted belief that children are our future.

- Redesign SUNY Schenectady Early Childhood Certificate and update course outlines to align with Infant Toddler CDA and Preschool CDA
- Redesign of ECH 260 Portfolio grading rubric to align with NAEYC, the NYS Core Body of Knowledge and NYS Early Learning Guidelines
- Designed Instructor Presentation Rubric for students’ assessment of teaching skills, teaching methods and knowledge of subject mat
- Awarded NAEYC Accreditation for SUNY Schenectady ECH Program; 1 of first 3 NYS ECH programs to receive national recognition
- Co-creator of the SUNY Schenectady Integrated Laboratory Preschool
