New High-Tech Flight Simulator Classroom Provides Hands-On Learning for Student Pilots and Air Traffic Controllers

Students in the Aviation Science and Air Traffic Control (ATC) degree programs are experiencing a whole new level of training, as they utilize industry-leading flight simulators in the College’s new STEM Aviation Laboratory. While aspiring pilots are “in the air” on a variety of aircraft, ATC students are online with them, controlling the airspace as if they were in the tower. Students are networked together so they can talk to each other and simulate airspace interactions in real time.

The 18 new simulators feature flight software from Lockheed Martin’s Prepar3D, Honeycomb Yoke/Throttle/Rudder controls, and high-end headsets for a realistic audio experience. Students “fly" FAA-certified flight simulators which can be used for logged flight training and students will conduct actual flight training in aircraft for their certificates and ratings. Students are practicing how to fly and control aircraft so they are better prepared to graduate on-time and on-budget.

One of those students is Paula Murillo-Nunez, an Aviation Science (Pilot) major, who plans to jump-start her career by becoming a pilot for the United States Air Force. 

“The new flight simulators are an amazing tool to stay sharp and practice our maneuvers,” she said. “You can fly at any airport in the world, at any time of day, and weather conditions of your choice.”

“Our STEM Aviation Laboratory affords our students the opportunities to learn flying fundamentals in a safe, protected environment while applying the best learning strategies in the most efficient manner possible,” said Dr. Eric Savage, Director of Aviation Programs.
