SUNY Schenectady is pleased to announce that Myat Kyaw, a Business Administration major, has been named to the first team of the prestigious Phi Theta Kappa All-New York Academic Team. Myat, who holds a 4.0 GPA, was recognized for his academic achievement during an awards ceremony on April 27 at the Empire Capital Center.

A member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, first-generation college student, and participant in the Advancing Success in Associate Pathways (ASAP) Program, Myat first began his studies at SUNY Schenectady in Fall 2024. A full-time student, he worked part-time for two years as a housekeeper at the Hilton Garden Inn Albany Airport before joining the Desmond Crowne Plaza in Albany. This experience, along with what he learned at the College, helped Myat take on additional supervisory responsibilities. He began the role part-time, but his hard work was quickly recognized, and he was promoted to full-time, where he now oversees a team.

Through his work at both hotels he discovered that he would like to pursue a career as a hotel general manager. “I really like learning customer service, leadership, and how organizations work,” he said. “I like communicating with a lot of different people and providing good customer service to guests.” He’s been applying what he has learned in Professor Matthew Farron’s Human Resource Management course to his work at the hotel saying, “I’m more confident at work because of that class. I’ve gained a better understanding of managing employee benefits, performance management, and training, and I now have a clearer understanding of my manager’s responsibilities.”

Myat will be graduating on May 21 during SUNY Schenectady’s 56th Commencement. He plans to transfer to the University at Albany this fall for his bachelor’s degree, followed by his master’s degree in Business Administration.
