Graduate Spotlight: A Lifelong Vocalist Heading to Eastman School of Music

For as long as he can remember, LayVon Scott has been singing. Since the age of 2, he has performed with the choir in his church, Mount Olive Southern Missionary Baptist Church in Albany, where he now directs the Youth Choir. His mom is the Choir Director and his father, a professional musician, plays bass. His younger brother plays the drums, his older brother sang in the church choir, and his younger sister sings as well. Music has shaped his life and as he graduates with his A.S. degree in Performing Arts: Music, this fall he will take it to the next level as he transfers for his bachelor’s degree in Music Education at the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester.
A 2022 graduate of Columbia High School, LayVon has performed with the College Chorus, Vocal Chamber Ensemble, and Totally Pitchin’ a cappella group, and tutored other students in theory, aural skills, and other music courses.
This summer, LayVon will perform music from the collection of William James Knapp (1843-1885) at Historic Cherry Hill in Albany and at The Sembrich in Bolton Landing, N.Y.
Career goal: A performer and music teacher.
What are you excited about in the future? “My hope for the future is to be happy and content with what I’m doing. I never want to wake up and not be excited to go to my job. I want to be happy and joyful. I’m excited to be around people who are amazing. If you only stay in one spot, you never know what the rest of the world has to offer.”
