Policy 2.7 - Teaching and Non-Teaching Faculty Emeritus Status

Purpose

SUNY Schenectady recognizes the profession of education as a lifetime commitment for many members of its community. Although retired from full-time participation, many individuals may continue their interest and make many more contributions to the education process. In every sense practicable, Emeriti will be considered professional peers of the faculty and staff of SUNY Schenectady. They will be encouraged to participate in the growth of the College and in the betterment of College service to students and to the people of the Capital Region.

Policy

In recognition of the continued value of this resource and as a method of rewarding exemplary past service, SUNY Schenectady may award Emeriti status to selected retired members.

Eligibility

  1. Served SUNY Schenectady in that capacity for 12 or more years immediately preceding retirement and have
  2. Consistently made significant meritorious contributions to the education process during those years.
  3. A rare exception may be made to the 12-year service requirement in the case of unusual circumstances, such as illness.

Selection

  1. After screening for eligibility and with the concurrence of the nominee, the President will forward the nominees to the Board of Trustees. The President may add nominees from areas that report directly to that office.
  2. The Board of Trustees will consider the nominations of the President and award Emeritus status at its discretion.
  3. The President will make appropriate recognition for all receiving Emeritus status annually.

Recognition

The College will award status for the lifetimes of the recipients and will accord recipients the following special considerations:

  1. They will continue to be listed in the College catalog, identified as Emeriti.
  2. Emeriti may serve on various committees and advisory panels serving the academic needs of the college.
  3. Emeriti may receive newsletters and other communications and similar courtesies appropriate to their status.
