Get To Know Hema Singh, Student Trustee and Criminal Justice Major
This month, Hema Singh, a Criminal Justice major, began her role as the Student Trustee. Elected by the student body last semester, Hema is a voting member of the Board of Trustees and will serve for one year. The other Trustees are appointed by the Schenectady County Legislature and the Governor.
Hema is also a senior at Schenectady High School, earning her associate degree at the College through the Early College High School Program. She began taking college courses the summer before she entered ninth grade. She was on campus full time last year and this year as well. Hema plans to graduate from both Schenectady High School and SUNY Schenectady this spring.
Why did you decide to run for Student Trustee?
"I decided to run for Student Trustee at SUNY Schenectady because leadership means listening, understanding, and advocating for others. Students deserve someone who can bring their needs and ideas forward to the Board in an effective and meaningful way."

What are your plans for this academic year as a student leader?
"My plan for this academic year as a student leader is to remain approachable and actively engage with the student body. I also want to set a positive example by demonstrating the importance of balancing leadership responsibilities with academic commitment and personal accountability."
What other clubs, programs, or organizations are you involved with at the College?
"I am the Founder and President of Speech & Debate Club, Vice President of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society for the 2026–2027 academic year, and former Vice President of the International Affairs Committee. I also volunteer around campus whenever my schedule allows."
Why did you decide to pursue your college degree while you are still in high school?
"I chose to pursue my college degree while still in high school because I value challenges and opportunities. Earning both degrees is beneficial, but I wanted to grow academically, embrace new possibilities, and I am grateful because this path led me here."
What are your plans after you graduate from SUNY Schenectady and your career plans?
"After graduating from SUNY Schenectady, I plan to continue my education by pursuing a bachelor’s degree. I am also interested in exploring the field of law further, while remaining open to the opportunities and experiences that may shape my future career path."
