In September 2012, the Faculty Student Association (FSA) of SUNY SCCC opened the Canal Side Café and Convenience Store on the ground floor of Elston Hall, transforming a vacant space into a cozy, hip café complete with fresh baked goods, smoothies, soups, sandwiches, salads and a variety of coffees, and a convenience store. The store now has a gluten-free section, in addition to carrying a variety of frozen meals, ice cream treats, dairy products, cereals, canned foods, fresh fruit, and healthy snacks.
Students inquired through the years if Canal Side participated in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which provides nutrition assistance to millions of eligible, low-income individuals and families across the country, and provides economic benefits to communities, through the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service. To accommodate student requests, the FSA applied to the USDA this fall and was recently notified that the USDA approved the application. Canal Side is pleased to now accept SNAP benefits in the convenience store to better serve the College community.
“The FSA’s mission is to ensure student success by providing them with the auxiliary supports they require,” said Donna Tessitore, Executive Director of the FSA. “Students asked about SNAP benefits and we responded. It is important students have the support necessary to achieve their academic goals. It is our pleasure to be able to provide the SCCC campus community this service.”
