Middle and High School Students Learn That There Are "No Limits"

Photo of middle school students seated in lecture hall raising their handsStudents from Mont Pleasant Middle School, Central Park Middle School, and Schenectady High School were on campus to learn tools and strategies to empower them and break stereotypes during “No Limits: Empowering Youth to Challenge Stereotypes.” The program was made possible through the No Limits Grant awarded by a collaboration among National Girls Collaborative Project, Mercedes Benz, and Mattel that the SUNY Schenectady Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP) earned in November 2019 (National STEM Day) to inspire and empower youth to play outside of the box and imagine different opportunities. Peer role models, College in the High School scholars, and SUNY Schenectady CSTEP students worked together with SUNY Schenectady faculty and Liberty Partnerships Program staff on presenting the program. Also, special surprises from Mercedes Benz and Mattel (die-cast Matchbox replicas of the Mercedes-Benz 220SE commemorating Ewy Rosqvist’s historic Argentinian Grand Prix performance on Nov. 4, 1962), sponsors of the grant, were shared with student participants.

“This program will really help to break stereotypes so that they don’t exist anymore,” said Bridgette Buckmire, a 12th-grader at Schenectady High School who is in the Liberty Partnerships Program. “This will help encourage students to pursue their dreams.” After graduating from high school, Bridgette’s goal is to continue on for her college degree and become an animator.

“One of goals of the program was to raise awareness about gender stereotypes. I saw an opportunity to inspire youth to dream big and become educators in STEAM,” said Dr. Lorena Harris, Director of the Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP) at SUNY Schenectady. “There are NO LIMITS if you are yourself, always prepared, and pursue your dreams - the sky is the limit.”
