ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESEARCH

This course is mandatory for students fulfilling the 60 experience hours required for the SUNY Schenectady Community Archaeology Program (CAP) certificate. Additionally, this course is required for all students engaged in archaeological research and laboratory under a SUNY Schenectady CAP instructor’s supervision. This course is necessary for all Community Archaeology Program (CAP) certificate students wishing to work on their approved archaeological products (e.g., articles for publication, exhibits, public presentations or site studies and reports) and is required for their Certificates of Advanced Study in Community Archaeology (CASCA). ZOOARCHAEOLOGY

Students will be using online laboratory work, readings, and interactive lectures in this introductory course to study the faunal (animal) remains from archaeological sites. Students will learn to identify animal bones and some of the methods zooarchaeologists use to learn about how people lived in the past through their relationship with animals. This course will focus on frequency analysis, estimating age at death, and identification of cut marks. Click here to register.

HANDS ON ARCHAEOLOGY FOR ADULTS

Archaeology is more than just digging. In this class students will be introduced to all aspects of archaeology starting with initial planning for a project, fieldwork, analysis, interpretation and ending with putting it all together in reporting the results. Instruction will be through online group or individual interaction with the instructor, hands-on exercises, and virtual field trips to site excavations and museums. Printed materials are optional. The focus will be on local research. Opportunities for continued involvement in any or all aspects of archaeology will be presented. Click here to register.
