SCCC's non-credit computer courses are offered days, evenings and weekends, so you're sure to find a time to suit your schedule. All courses permit 18 or fewer participants with one per computer. This allows personal attention from the instructor. Topics span basic computer operation to specific software operations. A variety of basic computer courses are offered every semester including: Introduction to Microcomputers, Computer Survival, Introduction to Windows 95, Windows 97 Daytime Series and Introduction to the Internet. These have few or no prerequisites. Frequently offered intermediate courses include: Intermediate Windows 95, Access for Windows 97, Excel for Windows 97, PowerPoint for Windows 97, and Word for Windows 97. SCCC's non-credit computer courses now include preparation classes for the Microsoft Office User Specialist (MOUS) Core Certification exams in Access, PowerPoint, Excel, and Word. These courses have open enrollment -- they are not just for certification seekers.
SCCC's non-credit community interest courses encompass a broad range of topics currently including but not limited to the following: college preparation, personal and career development, writing, archeology, fine arts and music. This is one of the fastest growing areas of non-credit programming. New courses are added each semester, so be sure to investigate these course descriptions often!
Get your General Equivalency Diploma! SCCC offers comprehensive G.E.D. preparatory classes that include small group and individual instructional components. 89% of our students pass the GED test on their first attempt! You must be at least 17 years old to register. Students with reading levels below grade 6 and math skills below grade 5 may be referred to outside agencies. Workbook fees are additional. Most sessions run Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM-12:30 PM. For more information click on the course descriptions.
The Office of Continuing Education regularly collaborates with other education providers and service agencies in the community to develop programs of special benefit to the residents of Schenectady County. Examples of these partnership programs include: ACHIEVEThis program provides both GED instruction and mandatory work experience for out-of-school youth. Administered by Schenectady Job Training Agency, half-day classes are held at SCCC, where youth have access to computer labs and specialized college services. Youth also spend one-half of each day at an approved work site. Program cycles begin in September and March. PAVEThe Progressive Adolescent Vocational Exploration program combines the efforts of Schenectady County, SCCC, and five school districts to implement an after school program for youth at risk. Students meet at SCCC two afternoons per week (3:00 - 6:00pm), where they receive computer instruction and engage in special career awareness/exploration activities. DISPLACED HOMEMAKERSSCCC collaborates with Schenectady Community Action Program in the delivery of four sessions of the Displaced Homemakers Program each year. This six-week program provides special training and support services for homemakers who are re-entering the workforce. EMPLOYMENT SKILLSIn collaboration with Northeast Career Planning, SCCC hosts this special program for adults with barriers to employment who wish to enter the workforce. Individualized programming includes computer applications and office skills, and features vocational rehabilitation counseling and job-seeking assistance.
