What is the test like?

The Specialist exam is not a written test. Instead, it features real-world assignments that are based on the way you actually use your computer. Using an actual document, you will be asked to perform a series of tasks that clearly demonstrate your desktop computing skills.

How long does the test take?

The typical exam takes less than an hour and in some cases as little as 30 minutes. It all depends on how efficiently you work. In addition to measuring your skills, each exam also gauges your productivity.

Where can I take the test?

The Office of Continuing Education at Schenectady County Community College- is an authorized testing center.

How much does it cost to take the test?

Each test costs $65.

Is it possible to cheat on the test?

It is not that kind of test. Users need to know what they are doing to pass. Test takers are not allowed to use manuals, notes, laptops, or any other aids during the test. Test takers can access the built-in Office Help features, but this may cost them valuable time and result in a failing test score.

If I don't pass a test, can I get a refund?

Refunds are not available for failing test scores or missed exam appointments.

Can I take an exam more than once?

There is no limit to the number of times a given exam can be taken. However, the same fee applies to each time an exam is taken.

How do I find out my test results?

Test results are displayed as soon as the test is completed. If candidates don't pass, they are advised of the areas where they should focus more attention. A certificate will be mailed to successful candidates in 4-6 weeks. The entire testing procedure is conducted within a framework of complete confidentiality. To maintain a high level of security, all test data is encrypted, and the actual testing process is closely monitored. Exam results are provided only to the candidate and to Microsoft.

How many levels of certification are there?

For Microsoft Office 97, there are three levels of certification - Proficient, Expert or Master. For Microsoft Office 2000, there are three levels of certification - Specialist, Expert and Master.

What types of Certified Microsoft Office User levels are available?

  1. Proficient (for Office 97) and Core (for Office 2000) User: This level indicates that you can handle a wide range of everyday tasks with ease. It is available for Microsoft Word 97 and 2000 and Microsoft Excel 97 and 2000. There are additional Core Certification exams for Office 2000 products PowerPoint, Access and Outlook.
  2. Expert User: This level indicates that you can handle proficient/core user tasks as well as more complex assignments that require advanced formatting and functionality. It is available for all Office 97 products, as well as Word 2000 and Excel 2000 in the Microsoft Office 2000 family.
  3. Microsoft Office Master: Once you have passed all applicable exams, you will be issued one certificate that indicates that you are an Office Master. This is the highest level of certification available.

How do I assess my experience?

You can start by taking a look at the Exam Preparation Guide that describes a list of skills you will need to demonstrate in order to become a Specialist at the level you choose. You can also take a look at the sample exam tasks to get a quick idea about what the test covers. Both items can be found on the MOUS web site www.mous.net.

How do I prepare for the tests?

There are many ways to get Microsoft Office training and experience. Although test candidates may prepare on their own to become a user Specialist, outside training helps ensure that you get the support, resources, and hands-on practice you need to become a Proficient or Expert Specialist. Schenectady County Community College offers a variety of non-credit and credit courses using Microsoft Approved Courseware to help you prepare for the test.
