Two new academic programs are on the horizon at SUNY Schenectady County Community College and a valuable mentoring program will blossom through significant SUNY Performance Improvement Funds (PIF) awards that the College has received. SUNY SCCC earned the following awards:
· $212,000 to support equipment purchases and marketing efforts for a new Mechatronics certificate program. College officials expect to offer the new program for the first time in Fall 2018. Through the 30-credit-hour certificate program, students will become proficient in developing system level troubleshooting skills, and installing, operating, maintaining, and repairing automated and robotically-controlled systems, equipment and component parts.
· $9,450 to support faculty stipends or release time in order to develop a Community Health Worker (CHW) certificate program. CHWs bridge services for individuals with medical issues through community outreach and education, advocacy, informal counseling, basic health screening, and social support. The new academic program builds upon courses offered through the College’s Office of Workforce Development and Community Education Allied Health Care Trainings program. It will provide a pathway for students in those courses, as well as new students interested in pursuing a career in health care, to earn a certificate.
· $83,725 to grow the Minority Student Mentoring Program (MSMP) by supporting leadership, professional development, promotion of the program, and student attendance at professional development conferences and training. The MSMP is designed to assist minority and under-represented students in their adjustment to academic and professional environments and improve the persistence, retention, and completion rates of the target population.
College officials noted that the funding from SUNY will enable them to move forward on the two new academic programs and to expand the mentoring initiative. “We are very appreciative to SUNY for this valuable funding,” said Dr. Steady Moono, President of SUNY SCCC. “Through the Performance Improvement Funds, we will be able to purchase essential equipment for the new Mechatronics certificate, begin designing the new Community Health Workers certificate, and build upon our Minority Student Mentoring Program, which has already made a meaningful difference in the lives of some of our students.”

In combination with the mentoring program and a career-focused pathway, we can provide successful outcomes for our students.”
